The online medicine stores are flooded with different weight loss supplements which claim remarkable benefits without notifying about their possible side effects. While some may be effective but others can have a telling effect on our health.

  • Hoodia Hoodia is a well known appetite suppressant that is prepared from hoodia gordonii. It is an herbal product and is not known to have any side effect till date.   • Fucoxanthin Fucoxanthin is a kind of antioxidant that is found in edible brown seaweed such as wakame, which is used in miso soup. it effectiveness on humans are yet to be seen as there is no human studies yet. But preliminary test results on animals shows that it targets the abdominal fat and has the potential of weight loss supplement. Abdominal fat is related to diabetes and heart problem and is a matter of concern for quirt a number of people. So fucoxanthin can be of great help to them.
  • Guarana Guarana is a plant found in the rain forest of Amazon, the seeds of which contain caffeine. The seeds are black in color and contains about double the amount of caffeine found in coffee beans. Caffeine is a kind of stimulant that increases the energy expenditure and helps in shedding weight. It also comes with the disadvantage of raising the activity of heart and central nervous system and can lead to anxiety and increased heart rate.
  • Apple cider vinegar It is a natural suppressant for appetite that has gained fame for burning fat. It is also available as pills and tablets. A diet plan, known as apple cider vinegar diet is also there based on it, where its pills are taken prior to each meal. Moreover cooking food with a little vinegar gives a feeling of satiety and prevents further food intake. But there are reports of side effects due to consumption of apple cider vinegar tablets.
  • Ephedra Epherdra is a plant that is generally found in parts of Asia and contains ephedra alkaloids, ephedrine. It is combined with caffeine or with caffeine containing herbs such as yerba mate and guarana to produce a caffeine-ephedra mixture that can result in considerable weight loss. But it comes with numerous side effects like high blood pressure, heart rate irregularities such as stroke, seizures, heart attack and even death. So it as banned by the FDA in 2004. Though it is still available online, but consumption of it should be avoided.
  • Bitter orange Its action is also very much same as ephedrine and was also banned in 2004. It contains the compounds synephyrine. It is known to cause abnormality in hearth rhythm. So it suggested, to consult a physician before going for it. It can also interact with medications and can alter their performances.

So it is highly advised to consult a reputed physician and to do a through research on the effectiveness of the various weight loss supplements before going for them.
